‘To the Wonder’ and ‘Divorce Invitation’ debut at Mary D. Fisher Theatre Sedona Film Festival presents all-star casts in award winning drama and romantic comedy The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premieres of Terrence Malick’s new film “To the Wonder” (starring Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem) and the romantic comedy “Divorce Invitation” (featuring an all-star cast) showing May 14-17 at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. TO THE WONDER Written and directed by Terrence Malick, “To the Wonder” is a romantic drama about men and women grappling with love and its many phases and seasons — passion, sympathy, obligation, sorrow and indecision — and the way these forces merge together and drift apart, transforming, and reinventing the lives they touch. Neil (Ben Affleck) is an American traveling in Europe who meets and falls in love with Marina (Olga Kurylenko), a Ukrainian divorcee who is raising her 10-year-old daughter Tatiana in Paris. The lovers travel to Mont St. Michel, the island abbey off the coast of Normandy, basking in the wonder of their newfound romance. Neil makes a commitment to Marina, inviting her to relocate to his native Oklahoma with Tatiana. He takes a job as an environmental inspector and Marina settles into her new life in America with passion and vigor. After a holding pattern, their relationship cools. Marina finds solace in the company of another exile, the Catholic priest Father Quintana (Javier Bardem), who is undergoing a crisis of faith. Work pressures and increasing doubt pull Neil further apart from Marina, who returns to France with Tatiana when her visa expires. Neil reconnects with Jane (Rachel McAdams), an old flame. They fall in love until Neil learns that Marina has fallen on hard times. Gripped by a sense of responsibility — and his own crisis of faith — he rekindles with Marina after another trip to France. She returns with him to Oklahoma, resuming her American life. But the old sorrows eventually return. Malick has concocted a deeply moving visual language intermingling love, nature and spirit — “all things work together for the good,” as one character in “To the Wonder” proclaims — that ranks among his most personal and heartfelt works. “To the Wonder” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre May 14-17. Showtimes will be 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday and 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. DIVORCE INVITATION Lainie Kazan, Elliott Gould, Richard Kind and Paul Sorvino head an all-star ensemble cast in the new romantic comedy “Divorce Invitation”. Mike (Jonathan Bennett) is happily married to Dylan (Jamie-Lynn Sigler), or so it seems when he runs into his high school sweetheart Alex (Nadia Bjordlin) — the girl that got away. Their chance meeting rekindles the old feelings he had all those years ago and now Mike’s convinced that Alex is his soul mate. There is only one problem: when he married Dylan, Mike signed an iron-clad pre-nuptial which states that in order to get out...

British romantic comedy ‘First Night’ premieres at Fisher Theatre May 7-8 Sarah Brightman, Richard Grant and Mia Maestro star in latest Sedona Film Festival offering The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premiere of the new British romantic comedy “First Night” — starring Sarah Brightman, Richard Grant and Mia Maestro — showing May 7 and 8 at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. Fusing the stately grandeur of Gosford Park with the magical music of Amadeus, “First Night” is a unique story of love’s fluctuating fortunes set against a backdrop of visual and vocal beauty. As the cast, the drama, and the music carefully walk a tightrope between humor and pathos a timeless romantic comedy unfolds. Adam (Richard E. Grant) is a rich industrialist and frustrated opera singer aspiring to a more cultured world. Spurred on by playful jibes that he’s just a city suit living a capitalist dream, he decides to stage an opera in his lavish country retreat. He feels sure the shallow taunting will end once his friends see him in full voice. In fact his singing might even help him win the hand of Celia (Sarah Brightman) the female conductor he’s been pursuing, especially since she is the first to be recruited for his showpiece. For the rest of the cast and the production Adam brings in the experts and enlists the aid of a troupe of sexy young singer with enough collective sexual tension to light up the stage. His choice of opera? Mozart’s “Cosi Fan Tutte”, the master composer’s fabled romp through the bittersweet territory of sexual infidelity. And as this disparate group flexes their melodic and melodramatic muscles, it won’t be long before life imitates art as relationships flourish and flounder. “Cosi Fan Tutte” is Mozart’s most popular opera. Although it has always been regarded as his most lyrical it has a cynical vein running through it which resonates with contemporary audiences. The story unfolds while rehearsals take place. As in the opera, so it is in the film. Mozart’s music heightens a comedic drama as a classic tale of love and betrayal plays out. “First Night” will be shown at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre two days only (four shows total) — May 7 and 8. Showtimes will be 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. Tickets are $12, or $9 for Film Festival members.
Special Mother’s Day weekend live theatrical event: Outrageous comedy “Assisted Living: The Musical” performed LIVE at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre with national touring company “Assisted Living: The Musical” comes to Sedona when it is performed by its authors Rick Compton and Betsy Bennet, who are currently doing a national tour of the production. This outrageous, live theatrical event will be presented by the Sedona International Film Festival at its Mary D. Fisher Theatre. There will be four performances May 9-12 — the perfect way to celebrate Mother’s Day weekend! Mom will never forget you took her to this Assisted Living, and she won’t cut you out of the will. The show — subtitled “Sex, Drugs and Gettin’ Old,” — delivers laughs from the opening scene. A newly-departed couple is greeted in the afterlife not by Elvis, but by Tiny Tim. The show romps through the “best years of their lives” at Pelican Roost, an active senior living community. The place oozes with characters who each have unique answers to later-life’s questions. “It’s like a cruise,” explains Pelican Roost resident Naomi Lipshitz-Yamamoto-Murphy, “except the final destination is not Cabo San Lucas.” Naomi is one of 18-characters played by the two actors. “Assisted Living: The Musical” opened in Naples, Florida in 2010 and immediately drew the attention of national and international press. It enjoyed AP coverage in more than 180 newspapers, and on the radio including the BBC and ABC World Radio News. The San Francisco Examiner called it “Wickedly funny.” The San Jose Mercury News warned, “You’ll die if you miss this one.” Its hometown Naples Daily News simply said, “Hilarious.” Audiences have expressed all manner of reaction to the show. One little old lady literally laughed herself off her chair and had to be helped up by two strong staffers. Another woman left the show in the middle, to return with a spare oxygen tank for her husband who was “laughing too much.” The show’s authors have a different take on aging than some. “Old age is no more about fixed incomes and disability than youth is all about student debt and hangovers,” says Rick Compton. “Imagine a world in which no one expects you to work, no one can get pregnant, and where you get a 20% discount just for being alive,” Betsy Bennett says. “That’s Assisted Living.” There will be four performances of “Assisted Living: The Musical”: Thursday, May 9 at 4 p.m., Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. and a special Mother’s Day matinee May 12 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $25 general admission and $20 for Film Festival members. Full-time student tickets are $15. Visit www.SedonaFilmFestival.org for tickets and performance information or call 928-282-1177. Both the Sedona International Film Festival Office and the Mary D. Fisher Theatre are located at 2030 W. SR 89A in West Sedona.

‘War Witch’ and ‘Love Birds” premiere and ‘Trash Dance’ returns to theatre Sedona Film Festival presents award-winning new independent films and a festival encore The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premieres of “War Witch” (Academy Award-nominee for Best Foreign Language Film) and “Love Birds” (an award-winning romantic comedy from New Zealand) showing April 16-19 at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. The theatre will also host a “Festival Encore” on Monday, April 15 with the one-night-only return of “Trash Dance”, which won an award at the recent film festival. TRASH DANCE “Trash Dance” — which won the Audience Choice Award for Best Documentary at the recent Sedona Film Festival — returns by popular demand for one night only on Monday, April 15. There will be two shows at 4 and 7 p.m. This film is part of the “Festival Encore” series which will take place over the next two months featuring the most-requested festival films in return engagements. Sometimes inspiration can be found in unexpected places. Choreographer Allison Orr finds beauty and grace in garbage trucks, and in the men and women who pick up our trash. Filmmaker Andrew Garrison follows Orr as she joins city sanitation workers on their daily routes to listen, learn, and ultimately to convince them to collaborate in a unique dance performance. Hard working, often carrying a second job, their lives are already full with work, family and dreams of their own. But some step forward and, after months of rehearsal, two dozen trash collectors and their trucks perform an extraordinary spectacle. On an abandoned airport runway, thousands of people show up to see how in the world a garbage truck can “dance.” Come discover what all the buzz was about at the festival! This was one of the most talked-about, joyous films in the lineup! Audiences were raving! WAR WITCH “War Witch” — Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film — is the winner of more than 29 international awards, including top awards at prestigious festivals around the world. Komona (Rachel Mwanza) — a 14 year old girl — tells her unborn child the story of how she became a rebel. It all began when she was 12; kidnapped by rebel soldiers and enslaved to a life of guerrilla warfare in the African jungle. Forced to commit unspeakable acts of brutality, she finds hope for survival in protective, ghost-like visions (inspiring a rebel chief to anoint her “War Witch”). Her only escape is a tender relationship with a fellow soldier and friend named Magician (Serge Kanyinda) — a 15 year old boy who wants to marry her. Despite the horrors and daily grind of war, Komona and Magician fall in love. Together, they manage to escape the rebels’ clutches, and a normal life finally seems within reach. After their freedom proves short-lived, Komona realizes she must find a way to bury the ghosts of her past. In order to survive, Komona will need to return to where she...

Film Festival presents New York’s 92nd Street Y: The Future of God April 14 simulcast will feature a discussion merging science and religion New York’s famous 92nd Street Y returns to Sedona on Sunday, April 14 when the Sedona International Film Festival hosts the live simulcast of The Future of God: The Merging of Science and Religion with Andrew Zolli and David Eagleman. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Reza Aslan. The special event will take place at the festival’s Mary D. Fisher Theatre, at 5:15 p.m., live as it is happening in New York. Must science and religion always be opposing and irreconcilable forces? Looking at recent trends in theoretical physics and the response of contemporary theologians to scientific theories, this panel discusses whether science and religion can, in fact, be seen as complementary ways of understanding our world. Dr. Reza Aslan will moderate a thought-provoking discussion featuring Andrew Zolli and David Eagleman. Andrew Zolli is a big picture thinker at the intersection of trends, technology, strategy and innovation. Zolli helps organizations see, understand and respond to complex change. A great storyteller and captivating speaker, he helps audiences look with fresh eyes at the future of their business. Zolli is co-author of the new book Resilience: The Science of Why Things Bounce Back. The book is about why some organizations fall apart in the face of disruption, while others flourish. Resilient organizations do not rely on any single plan for the future, but are agile and responsive: they thrive, rather than merely survive, amidst change. From finance to associations, healthcare to industry, it is immediately relevant to anyone looking to “maintain their core purpose and integrity in the face of dramatically changed circumstances.” Zolli is also the Executive Director and curator of PopTech, an elite group of thought leaders that explores key forces influencing the future. Collaborating with a diverse network of prominent companies, well-respected nonprofits, public policy groups and venture-backed startups, Zolli leads cutting-edge innovation that is helping to solve the world’s biggest problems. David Eagleman is a neuroscientist and a New York Times bestselling author. He directs the Laboratory for Perception and Action at the Baylor College of Medicine, where he also directs the Initiative on Neuroscience and Law. He is best known for his work on time perception, synesthesia and neurolaw. At night he writes. His work of fiction, SUM, is an international bestseller published in 27 languages. His book on the internet and civilization, Why the Net Matters, is available as an app for the iPad and as an eBook. Wednesday is Indigo Blue explores the neurological condition of synesthesia, in which the senses are blended. His latest book, The New York Times bestseller Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain, explores the neuroscience “under the hood” of the conscious mind – in other words, all the aspects of neural function to which we have no awareness or access.
‘Oscar Shorts Program’ and ‘Please Subscribe’ premiere Feb. 5-8 Sedona Film Festival presents new independent films at its Mary D. Fisher Theatre The Sedona International Film Festival is proud to present the Northern Arizona premieres of The Oscar Shorts Programs 2013 and “Please Subscribe” (in a one-night only special presentation) at its Mary D. Fisher Theatre. PLEASE SUBSCRIBE One night only — Tuesday, Feb. 5 The Sedona Film Festival and Mary D. Fisher Theatre join cinemas across the country in a one-night, one-show only special presentation of a new, timely documentary “Please Subscribe” on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 4 p.m. “Please Subscribe” is a documentary that explains the phenomenon of some of the most influential and unique content creators raising the bar on Youtube and for online media in general. Through a series of intimate narrative vignettes, the film explores the different journeys taken by some of the medium’s top creators to get where they are today. The film focuses on one main question that is “What makes a YouTuber?” Ask anyone in the community and they will each provide a different answer. No one thing makes a YouTuber, but rather it’s the journey these creators have taken to pave their own unique path. YouTube is the third most trafficked site on the internet. Each month over 800 million people log on to watch over 3 billion hours of video. Every single minute, 72 new hours of video are uploaded to YouTube. In January 2012, Deloitte published that 9% of cable customers cancelled their service the previous year, and another 11% were considering cancelling. The way people watch entertainment is changing, and it’s opening up a new world of opportunities with new names and faces. THE OSCAR-NOMINATED SHORT FILMS 2013 Live Action and Animation • Feb. 6-8 For the first time ever, Sedona audiences will be able to see all of the short films nominated for Academy Awards before the Oscar telecast at the end of February.
Film Festival presents Live from New York’s 92nd Street Y — two shows! Feb. 5 simulcast will feature Justice Sonia Sotomayor; Feb. 7 event will feature Lemba Jews New York’s famous 92nd Street Y comes to Sedona on Feb. 5 and 7 when the Sedona International Film Festival hosts the live simulcast of programs and discussions with Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor (Tuesday, Feb. 5) and the Lemba Jews of Zimbabwe (Thursday, Feb. 7) The special events will take place at the festival’s Mary D. Fisher Theatre, live as they are happening in New York. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor with Thane Rosenbaum Tuesday, Feb. 5 • 6:00 PM The appointment of Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court electrified the nation. The first Hispanic Justice on the high court, and a Latina with a compelling life story—raised in a Bronx housing project, educated at Princeton and Yale, worked as a Manhattan prosecutor and then a federal judge — she already possessed a sterling legal career before becoming perhaps the most recognizable face on the Supreme Court. And now she is the author of a memoir, “My Beloved World” — a revealing book about the personal values and important influences that propelled this fascinating American success story. Join us for this most special occasion— the celebration of a New York life. Sotomayor graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University in 1976 and received her J.D. from Yale Law School in 1979, where she was an editor at the Yale Law Journal. She was an advocate for the hiring of Latino faculty at both schools. She worked as an assistant district attorney in New York for four and a half years before entering private practice in 1984. She played an active role on the boards of directors for the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, the State of New York Mortgage Agency, and the New York City Campaign Finance Board. Sotomayor was nominated to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York by President George H. W. Bush in 1991, and her nomination was confirmed in 1992. In 1997, she was nominated by President Bill Clinton to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. On the Second Circuit, Sotomayor heard appeals in more than 3,000 cases and wrote about 380 opinions. Sotomayor has taught at the New York University School of Law and Columbia Law School. In May 2009, President Barack Obama nominated Sotomayor to the Supreme Court to replace retired Justice David Souter. Her nomination was confirmed by the Senate in August 2009 by a vote of 68–31. The Lemba Jews of Zimbabwe with Modreck Zvakavapano Maeresera Thursday, Feb. 7 • 6:15 PM Join us at the New York premiere of the first US speaking tour of a member of Zimbabwe’s Lemba Jewish community! This is a landmark speaking tour, as the Lemba community has remained in relative secrecy and isolated from other Jews for generations,...
